Plumbing Engineering Supervisor

Location: Milwaukee, WI

 

Join HGA—an award-winning architecture, engineering, interior design, and planning firm—where your technical skills and creative thinking can make a national impact. We’re seeking a Plumbing Engineer & Supervisor to join our growing Mechanical team.

 

In this role you are responsible for leading the design, coordination, and documentation of plumbing systems for a wide range of building projects while providing day-to-day leadership and mentorship to a team of plumbing designers.

 

This role combines technical expertise with people leadership, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, code-compliant, and innovative plumbing design solutions and collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors, and project managers to support successful project outcomes while fostering professional growth, technical excellence, and a positive, collaborative team environment.

 

In this role you will:

 

Technical Design Leadership

 

  • Design plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, medical gas, storm drainage, and specialty systems.
  • Perform plumbing calculations and building load analyses.
  • Select plumbing equipment and develop piping layouts.
  • Create and edit project details, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Participate in design reviews, coordination meetings, and project workshops.
  • Research design options and present findings and recommendations to project teams.
  • Resolve complex design challenges, including conflicting owner requirements, system selection considerations, and challenging field conditions.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Coordinate plumbing systems with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Utilize Revit, BIM, and other digital design tools to develop coordinated project documentation.

 

Team Leadership & Work Direction

 

  • Set priorities, assign work, and align team efforts with project schedules and deliverables.
  • Clarify expectations regarding scope, quality, timelines, and performance.
  • Monitor progress and adjust workloads to meet project commitments.
  • Foster collaboration and accountability while supporting successful project execution.

 

Performance Management

 

  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and provide timely, clear, and constructive feedback.
  • Establish performance goals and complete employee performance evaluations.
  • Address performance concerns proactively and partner with Human Resources when appropriate.
  • Recognize and encourage strong performance and professional achievement.

 

Employee Development & Coaching

 

  • Coach, mentor, and support the professional growth and development of team members.
  • Identify employee strengths and development opportunities.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to build technical expertise and leadership capabilities.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, engagement, and professional excellence.

 

Resource Planning & Team Effectiveness

 

  • Balance workload and staffing assignments across the team.
  • Support recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and onboarding activities.
  • Assist with succession planning and long-term team development efforts.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to ensure project staffing needs are met.

 

Communication & Engagement

 

  • Communicate priorities, expectations, and organizational objectives clearly and consistently.
  • Foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
  • Address team concerns and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Build strong relationships across disciplines and project teams.

 

Operational Responsibilities

 

  • Follow and uphold company policies, procedures, and quality standards.
  • Complete required administrative and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Maintain appropriate employee and project documentation.
  • Support departmental and organizational initiatives as needed.

 

You will need to have:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • 15+ years of consulting engineering experience with an emphasis on plumbing design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or other certification recognized by a state licensing board preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable plumbing codes, regulations, industry standards, engineering practices, techniques, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in Revit, BIM, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to mentor, develop, and influence team members in a collaborative environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize workload, and meet project deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Positive, team-oriented mindset with a commitment to fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • Dedication to continuous professional development and supporting the growth and advancement of others.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems and building controls preferred but not required.

 

Salary Information:

 

The pay range listed aligns to the geography of the office for which this position is posted. Actual compensation will be based upon work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer. Individuals in this role working more than 24 hours a week on a regular basis are eligible to participate in HGA’s robust benefit programs which include an annual bonus and success sharing bonus program, 401(k) guaranteed contribution, paid parental leave, medical, dental and life insurance plans as well as PTO and short- and long-term disability programs. Salary Range: $136,000 - $146,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
