This position is responsible for providing thoughtful advice and leadership in the areas of employee relations, recruiting, performance management, training and development, while implementing firm-wide HR projects, processes, policies and procedures supporting the vision and values of HGA.  Collaboration with internal teams, building culture, and developing and sustaining internal relationships are key elements to the success of this position.  This position reports to the Director of Human Resources, and interacts with leadership, project staff (designers, architects, engineers), and department staff in our California offices.  While this position is virtual at the moment, we will be looking for someone already residing in the Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, or Los Angeles area.


Key areas of responsibility:


Recruitment, Employee Relations and Compensation

  • Provides support and consulting in assigned offices in all human resources functions
  • Conducts recruitment efforts for exempt and nonexempt staff
  • Acts as trusted advisor providing advice and counsel to managers on employee relations matters
  • Performs employee relations activities to promote increased communication, conflict resolution, and employee recognition programs
  • Counsels employees and leadership to settle work-related conflicts through advice and recommendation
  • Initiates and participates in staff development, including coaching, performance evaluations, career path, and compensation recommendations
  • Provides compensation recommendations to ensure compliance and equity within the organization
  • Develops, writes, and updates job descriptions from direct observation and/or interviews with the position incumbent and discussions with supervisors
  • Collaborates on the development of onboarding content and conducts in-office new employee orientation
  • Updates the HRIS system accurately and on a timely basis with changes in personnel and compensation levels



  • Facilitates various training programs to include hiring and selection, performance management, supervisor and leadership skills, and HR legal updates
  • Researches and recommends external employee training, when applicable


HR Department participation

  • Participates in developing department goals, objectives and systems
  • Recommends and implements new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvements in the efficiency of the HR department and performed services
  • Leads HR strategic goal projects as needed
  • Using the HRIS system and other information resources, generates a variety of department reports in order to compile related statistics and to provide useful information to the organization
  • Ensures policies, procedures and reporting are in compliance with legal requirements and government reporting regulations
  • Keeps abreast of current trends and developments in human resources by establishing professional affiliations and participating in professional activities to include seminars, conferences, and reading appropriate books and journals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or other related field or equivalent
  • 8 plus years of progressive HR Generalist experience
  • Expert knowledge in California employment law
  • Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) or SHRM-SCP certification preferred
  • Professional services firm experience desired
  • Experience with iCIMS applicant tracking software
  • Familiarity with ADP payroll software, or equivalent
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products – Word and Excel
  • Ability to travel, including overnight as required (20%)
