  • Overview

    HGA has an exciting opportunity for a talented, ambitious mechanical project engineer or designer with good people skills to join our Alexandria, VA office.

    In this position, you will perform mechanical engineering duties and responsibilities and work with the Project Manager in the design of project solutions maintaining a commitment to design and quality. This position works under the supervision of a Senior Project Engineer or a Senior Project Leader for large projects, or may lead smaller projects.


    1. Leads the mechanical systems document production effort, including making assignments, reviewing work, and meeting deadlines for project document deliverables and coordinating with the HGA team.
    2. Writes scope of work for mechanical design based on preliminary review and meetings with the client.
    3. Researches non-routine code issues and obtain interpretations from code officials.
    4. Prepares engineering studies and schematic design for new systems and analyze operation of existing systems.
    5. Produces sketches and system schematics for complicated design tasks such as layout of mechanical rooms.
    6. Reviews drawings and documents to assure compliance with company design and production standards. Assures that drawings and designs are in accordance with design standards.
    7. Makes calculations, using engineering formulas and skills for mechanical designs such as heating and cooling loads, energy models, documentation of ASHRAE 62.1 compliance, etc.
    8. Selects, sizes and schedules equipment, designs and documents ductwork, piping, plumbing, fire protection, and controls systems.
    9. Review contractor cost estimates.
    10. Assists with preparing addendum and change orders.
    11. Initiates additional service requests and coordination with the Project Manager for submittal to client.
    12. Produce final punch list, and work with commissioning authority to trouble shoot issues.
    13. Uses computer programs and spread sheets for engineering analysis and presentations.
    14. Performs other duties or responsibilities as assigned.


    • B.S. degree, Mechanical Engineering or Associate Degree, Mechanical Systems Design
    • PE (Professional Engineer registration) preferred
    • LEED accreditation preferred
    • A minimum of 6 years of mid- to large-project experience, 8+ years’ experience preferred
    • Knowledge of Revit and AutoCad
    • Energy modeling and commissioning experience are preferred
    • Secured government clearance preferred
