HGA is an award-winning architectural, engineering and planning firm seeking an intern to join our Sustainable Design group for 10 hours/week from January through April. This position will work in collaboration with HGA’s Resilient Design Task Force and the Minnesota Resiliency Collaborative, an interdisciplinary, cross-market community of practice that brings together public, private, and academic sectors around topics of climate resilience. This position will receive guidance and mentorship from leaders within HGA and from research scientists from the Minnesota Department of Health’s Climate and Health Program, the Department of Natural Resources Office of Climatology, and the University of Minnesota.

    This project involves identifying:

    1. Which US states or cities have dynamically downscaled climate data sets
    2. For those having downscaled data, identify:
    • The funding mechanism(s)
    • Downscaling methodology used and data source
    • Applied policy: what were the policy outcomes?
    • Design and infrastructure applications, as well as any other uses
    • Ongoing costs for maintaining/updating the data

The intern will be responsible for collecting this information with a variety of means, including research library catalogs and phone calls and interviews with authors and researchers.

Deliverables the intern is responsible for include:

    1.  A report detailing all states or cities and their use of (or lack thereof) downscaled climate data

For those with downscaled data, information on:

    1. The funding mechanism(s)
    2. Downscaling methodology used and data source
    3. Applied policy: what were the policy outcomes?
    4. Design and infrastructure applications and other uses
    5. Ongoing costs for maintaining/updating the data

    2.  Written case studies telling stories from states or cities that have successfully used climate data for policy changes, infrastructure and/or design requirement changes (code, guidelines, recommendations), or other applications

Deliverables the intern will contribute to, working in collaboration with their mentors from HGA and the Minnesota Department of Health:

    1. Paper to submit for publication in a peer-reviewed journal
    2. Project outline and summary for use in conference proposals
    3. Recommendations for policy and/or infrastructure/design changes applicable in the State of Minnesota

    • Current undergraduate or graduate student. Areas of study applicable include: environmental studies, climatology, political science, architecture, engineering, public health
    • Research skills including: data collection, strong writing skills, interviewing, data comparison and assessment
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite required, knowledge of Adobe InDesign helpful
    • Knowledge of forms and sources of downscaled global climate models preferred
    • Knowledge of the following is helpful, but not required:
      • IPCC Global Circulation Models
      • Regional impacts of climate change
