HGA has an excellent opportunity for a talented, ambitious, licensed medical planner with strong planning and design skills to join our Minneapolis, MN office. This position requires excellent communication and people skills as you will work closely with the Principal, Project Manager and Sr. Medical Planners to work with functional site planning and space programming for renovations and new construction for all types of healthcare facilities including replacement hospitals. Collaboration with this team is a must in order to develop a functional master plan and/or program that achieve client goals within established timelines and budget.


  1. Possesses ability and expertise to program and plan healthcare facilities and collaborates with user groups, departments, and hospital administration
  2. Works with Principal in the development and analysis of the client’s building program so that it can be communicated clearly with the project team for all project phases
  3. Works closely with doctors, nurses and other medical personnel to reach consensus on concepts to address space needs
  4. Demonstrates credible knowledge of current healthcare planning and programming concepts
  5. Conducts research and analyses of space utilization, determines space requirements for expanding, and creates solutions to meet evolving needs
  6. Works closely with project managers, contractors and consultants to implement design concepts through project completion
  7. Represents the Principal in maintaining positive client relationships
  8. Contributes to and assists Principals as appropriate in the marketing of assigned projects including development of proposals and possible participation in client interviews
  9. Utilizes past experience and technical knowledge to monitor the quality of drawings produced, coaching as appropriate
  10. Keeps current on new methodologies related to healthcare design, planning, sustainability, LEAN, and evidence based design principles
  11. Works with Healthcare Practice Group leaders in the development and implementation of annual goals and objectives
  12. Utilizes expertise and shares knowledge with colleagues and mentors junior staff members on healthcare planning concepts


  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Master’s degree preferred
  • LEED accreditation preferred
  • 5+ years of mid- to large-healthcare project experience / medical planning
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp and other industry accepted software as well as expertise with project management software and Microsoft Office Suite products is needed
